19 "Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, 20 but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also. - Matthew 6:19-21

We were made to worship. On every page of the Bible is the idea of worshiping God. And the essence of worship can be found in the first of the Ten Commandments: “You shall have no other gods before me.” We find the same message here as we are reminded not to store up treasures in this world. We were not made to worship the created, we were made to worship the Creator.

The amazing thing is not that God invites our worship, but that He accepts from us what He does not need. The more we study God’s Word, the more we begin to understand He is leading us to the attitude of worshiping Him, because in His presence is where we rightly belong. Whether we realize it or not, we need to worship—and God wants our worship because He wants what’s best for us.

When we allow anything to accumulate on the table of our heart and mind, occupying our time and attention in a worshipful way—that’s a problem. But sweeping all of those things off the table so only God remains as the object of our worship aligns with our ultimate reality. We are to love for Him, breathing for Him, living for Him, and spending our lives for Him. God in the center of our attention is the essence of worship.
