For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. - 1 Corinthians 1:18

People of this world think it is folly for us to put our faith in a Creator because we can't see Him.  They think it is foolish for us to believe in things that are yet to come because our Savior has promised them to us, yet they put their faith in future things all the time. They put their faith in their careers, or their ability to solve their problems. They put their faith in people, or their bank accounts.

But here’s the interesting dichotomy - people of this world are filled with fear. Fear itself is just another form of faith - only it's faith in the wrong thing. Fear believes in things that are yet to come, it just chooses to believe in trials and tragedies. Fear defined is an unpleasant emotion caused by the belief that someone or something is dangerous, likely to cause pain, or a threat. Fear is driven by the faith that something terrible is going to happen, and impacts our choices and responses, our hearts and our relationships.

I am intimate with fear as it has ruled my thinking and defined my actions for much of my life. My need to control was rooted in my fears,  which led to crippling anxiety each time I discovered I was powerless to change my future. It wasn't until I learned my fear was the result of placing my faith in the god of this world that I began to change.  I have a choice to place my faith in the God of the universe, the God who promises all things will work out for good, the God who pursues me with a steadfast love, who promises to strengthen me and comfort me, and bring me peace despite the chaos or trial in front of me. That’s the faith I choose.
