9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. - Galatians 6:9-10 I heard something the other day that caused me pause - if God answered your, would it impact anyone’s life but you? Immediate family and close friends are included in “you.”  Pray prayers bigger than you. What if we all spent at least one prayer time per week praying for things outside of us?  That would be the good we’re not supposed to give up on.  When we accept Christ into our lives, we accept an invitation onto a battlefield. 9 And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up. 10 So then, as we have opportunity, let us do good to everyone, and especially to those who are of the household of faith. - Galatians 6:9-10 The true encouragement in this verse comes from the second part of verse 9 - for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up .  If we continue to do those things He has called us to do, we will reap the benefit in due time. If we continue to read scripture daily and work to apply it to our lives, if we continue to pray for His will for us and the people in our lives, if we continue to serve Him with the gifts He has given us, He will respond. We will see the benefits of our staying under His will if we keep at it. The blessings will be abundant - we are promised that.  The problem is many of us grow weary of continuing to do His “good” because we don’t see the impact of our choices right away. If we read the verses just before this one, we understand the good Paul is referring to in this verse. “For the one who sows to his own flesh will from the flesh reap corruption, but the one who sows to the Spirit will from the Spirit reap eternal life.” - Galatians 6:8. The good we should not grow weary from are those things that reap eternal life.  When we reflect on whether we’re doing good, we just need to consider the impact on our eternal life, or the eternal life of those around you. If what we’re spending our energy on has no impact on our eternal life, then it’s not worth wearing ourselves out over.  We should not grow weary of reading our Bible and seeking to live by what it teaches...

Before we define what ‘good’ Paul is referring to, we need to first reflect on why we are growing weary.  We can grow weary from trying to meet our busy schedules full of what we think is good.  It’s critically important we are consistently evaluating what we’re adding to our schedules as good - what is causing us to grow weary?  Sometimes we can get caught in the trap of thinking we’re trying to do good, but the reality is we’re not at all on God’s plan, we’re on our own. It’s the perfect verse to start off a new year - don’t give up, don’t grow tired, keep doing good, keep pressing on.  There’s this sense of locking arms with others, like we’re all in this together. We can do this if we just don’t give up.  It starts with “Let us not grow weary”.  Great encouragement, but we all grow tired, don’t we?  Are we just supposed to ignore our weariness or press through it?  There are some days when we’ve had enough and we just don’t have the energy to keep going. " Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son, and they shall call his name Immanuel" (which means, God with us).  - Matthew 1:23 As we welcome the New Year today, and say goodbye to the Christmas season, it’s important we don’t leave the message of this verse behind - God is with us. In these words we find the comfort and the strength of knowing Jesus’ continued presence. But what’s the purpose of His continued presence within you? The Holy Spirit dwells with you to make you more like Jesus. We don’t have the power to do that on our own, we need the Spirit. No amount of will power behind a New Year’s resolution to be or do something better than we did last year is enough to make it happen. Only the Spirit living inside of you can bring about the changes God wants for you. The Spirit works in us - we become more and more like Jesus, and we reflect His glory to those around us. We should be able to look back on where we were this time last year and see a difference.  We’re not who we should be yet, we’re not who we could be, but by the grace of God, we should be able to say we’re not who we were.  We should be growing more and more aware of ‘God with us’ with every year that passes.  So many wonderfully kind people have sent me wishes for a better New Year in the last week or so - for a healthier and happier 2018, and it's usually attached to some comment about how 2017 has been such a challenging year for me.
